Esurance insurance is one of the newer carriers on the block. Founded in 1999, it was purchased by Allstate in 2011 and is now part of the Allstate family. When the company first came on the insurance scene, it was a digital-only provider designed to provide competitive pricing on premiums, without the use of an agent network. While this insurance model has undoubtedly attracted many customers over the years, in 2019 it was announced that the brand Esurance would be phased out. While it will eventually operate under the name of its parent company, Allstate, Esurance will continue to offer new auto, homeowners, and renters policies for customers who prefer a more digital experience.

Esurance Auto Insurance
Esurance auto insurance focuses on providing an all-digital insurance experience. Whether a policyholder needs to submit a claim, obtain a new quote, make a payment, or update billing information, these tasks can be completed through the smartphone app or online. Because of this digital concept, Esurance claims to be able to save drivers quite a bit on their auto insurance premiums. The carrier currently offers the standard auto insurance coverage options, such as liability, comprehensive and collision, and personal injury protection (PIP). A few optional coverages are offered too, such as roadside assistance and gap insurance.
Esurance also emphasizes a quick claims process. The app is designed to allow a driver to simply snap pictures of the damage to their vehicle and quickly upload them to start the claim process. Once the claim is entered, a representative is expected to contact the policyholder within one business day. For some policyholders, it may also be possible to receive payment within the business day, in an effort to make the restitution process as quick as possible.
Currently Esurance is not mentioned in any J.D. Power auto insurance studies for overall customer satisfaction. However, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) records a 1.06 complaint index for the auto insurance portion. This is right in line with the industry average.
Strengths: Esurance is backed by Allstate, which is one of the largest auto insurance providers in the country. It also features a highly-rated mobile app so you can conduct almost all your policy management business right at your fingertips. With the app, you can file an auto insurance claim, pay your bill, and potentially make changes directly to your policy without making any phone calls.
Restrictions: Esurance is currently available in 42 states.
Discounts: Esurance offers a bundling discount if you purchase both a homeowners or renters policy and an auto insurance policy. Drivers may also save with the DriveSense option. This is another mobile app offered by Esurance, in which your driving habits are monitored and based on the feedback, could possibly qualify you for further savings.
Esurance Home Insurance
Like the auto insurance offerings, Esurance offers the basic homeowners policy coverages you would expect from any insurance carrier. Esurance offers dwelling coverage for damage to a home from incidents such as theft, vandalism, wind, hail, or lightning damage. Other structures, such as sheds and gazebos, are also covered in the homeowners policies. In addition to dwelling, liability, and personal property coverage, optional high-value coverage can be added to extend the limits for the more valuable items in your home, such as jewelry or artwork.
With Esurance homeowners policies, policyholders can also use the mobile app to take pictures of damage and submit a claim. Not all homeowners insurance carriers offer this option, so this may be one area where Esurance stands out for those who value this digital claim management option. The app also includes the options to update your policy, personal information, or make a bill payment.
While there are no J.D. Power customer satisfaction ratings for the company’s home insurance offerings, Esurance does receive a high complaint index with the NAIC for this product. The company currently earns a rating of 2.47 with 12 complaints filed, which is a good bit above the industry average.
Strengths: Esurance homeowners insurance is backed by Allstate, which may help lend credibility to the company. As the name suggests, all claims and questions are handled either online or through the app, although you do have access to customer service agents, if you prefer.
Restrictions: Esurance homeowners insurance is not available in all states. Since coverage options are constantly being added or adjusted, if you are interested in a homeowners policy you will need to confirm if coverage is offered where you live, and which are available to you.
Discounts: A multi-policy discount for bundling both home insurance and auto coverage is currently the only discount offered by Esurance.
Esurance Life Insurance
At this time, Esurance does not offer life insurance policies. Its parent company, Allstate, does offer four types of life insurance, including term, universal, whole, and variable life insurance. Allstate’s life insurance offerings are not currently included in J.D. Power’s 2020 Life Insurance Study or in its Individual Life Insurance Study for 2021.
